- Description: A day-trip photo story from Ledenika and Devetashka caves in Bulgaria, with mountain roads, a waterfall stop and an off-road splash sequence.

This was not only a two-cave visit. The photographs follow the full day across the Balkan Mountains: green ridges near the Arch of Freedom, the daylight-filled scale of Devetashka, the darker guided chambers of Ledenika, a muddy roadside experiment, and an unexpected railway stop on the way home.

## Across the Balkan Mountains

Before reaching the caves, the road crosses open mountain slopes and long forested valleys. I kept these first frames wide and quiet because they establish the distance between the stops — and make the sudden size of Devetashka’s entrance feel even more abrupt.

## Devetashka Cave

Devetashka cave is the place to be. Enormous, gigantic cave entrance with impressive natural holes above you. A must-visit place for sure.

The front chamber feels almost outdoors. Huge openings in the roof pour daylight onto rock, water and vegetation, while the deeper passages fall quickly into darkness. That mix of bright green growth and black limestone made Devetashka the more graphic of the two caves to photograph.

A flashlight is useful in the darker permitted areas, but stay on marked visitor routes and follow current on-site restrictions. Devetashka shelters a major bat colony, so access to deeper sections can be limited to protect the habitat.

## Ledenika Cave (Леденика)

Next was Ledenika (Леденика). Its cave system impressed me with its depth, volume and acoustics. Unlike Devetashka’s broad natural light, Ledenika unfolds through narrow passages, staircases and deep halls shaped by artificial light. The camera had to work with silhouettes, pools of amber and blue, and the scale of people moving through the formations.

For photographs, the challenge was not to brighten everything. Leaving parts of the frame black preserved the feeling of the cave and made the lit rock, railings and visitors read as small islands in the darkness. Stay with the guided route rather than stepping into unlit side passages for a shot.

## Peperudata Waterfall & the Sunset Stop

The cave interiors gave way to a mountain road, late sunlight and a puddle deep enough to turn a passing four-wheel-drive vehicle into a complete wall of spray. The sequence is playful, but it also closes the day with motion after so many still, enclosed spaces.

We stopped by this amazing location, watching the sunset catch the mountain tops. We passed by some puddle of water which I decided I should take some shots on our way back. Which we certainly did 🤣

## The Puddle Sequence

The still sequence catches the vehicle entering the puddle, disappearing inside the spray and emerging through suspended water. I was covered in water and dirt by the end, but the photographs were worth it 💦🔥

## Koprivshtitsa Station

The final photographs are quieter again: a yellow railway service vehicle, its worn cab and cracked window, then low cloud settling over forest and villages during the drive home. It is an accidental ending, but it fits the day better than another cave photograph would have.

Service train at Koprivshtitsa (📍 [Копривщица](https://goo.gl/maps/6CXGaaqzzuYHpSZ88?ref=damirissimo.com)) train station. Located in the mountains, I bet the train ride there is must-see experience. Need to take it someday.

Practical notes: Ledenika is in the Vrachanski Balkan above Vratsa and is open to visitors year-round - check the [official Ledenika Park page](https://openvratsa.bg/en/aktivnosti/ledenika-adventure-park?ref=damirissimo.com) for current hours. Devetashka, near the village of Devetaki in Lovech Province, is one of Europe's most important bat habitats; only part of the cave is open to visitors and access can be limited during bat breeding season ([Devetashka Cave on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devetashka%5FCave?ref=damirissimo.com)).
