A November 2022 journey into the Rhodope Mountains, from rough forest roads and a Toyota on the trail to rocky overlooks, autumn details and Karadzhov Kamak.

Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains are a place I wanted to visit and revisit. This gallery records our trip in November 2022: rough roads, forest details, a Toyota on the trail and mountain views that made the journey worthwhile. The photographs move between the broad landscape and things easy to pass by—stacked logs, moss, fallen leaves and the shapes of weathered trees.

From the road to the rocky overlooks

The gallery keeps the journey and its pauses together: views through the windscreen, the forest floor, people resting above the valleys and the rock formations at Karadzhov Kamak, identified in the original caption. The season is part of the story—these are photographs from November 2022, not a report on present-day roads or access.
